Men's Recovery Program
Working with men who are bound with life controlling addictions, attitudes, and behavioral problems, the Center guarantees success under the condition that you "take the medicine required" -- hard work, Biblical teaching and preaching, education, an open heart, and, of course, Jesus.
Men's Recovery ProgramIn 1993, Charlie Sharpe was driving in a Ford Pickup by the lake on the property, which is now known as Heartland, when God grabbed his attention. Charlie had long been disturbed about the fact that America was losing her youth. Now God challenged Charlie to do something about it. In May of 1995, Heartland was born from that earlier encounter in the middle of Northeast Missouri cornfields. Today, the growing ministry includes recovery centers and group homes for men and women. It is a place where people can experience the restoration of their broken lives through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Admission to the ProgramToday the Recovery Center houses 80 to 100 men of all ages and from all over the United States and the world. Residents come into the program by word of mouth, referral from other programs, and from TV and radio programs. The primary criteria for participating in the program is a willingness and desire to change. To be admitted a candidate must first contact our admissions office and follow our admission guidelines to assure a successful entry. Individuals must commit to an 18 month program. The program is intensive, and not all participants stay the entire 18 months. For those who do, it is a life changing experience. HousingThe Heartland Recovery Center for men consists of two facilities on a campus of rolling farmland close to the Heartland Dairy. The dorm-style living arrangements consist of rooms with two to three occupants, community bath and dining hall, a chapel and outdoor recreation. The meals are prepared by staff members and residents, and general clean-up is rotated among the residents. Work EthicHeartland is dedicated to helping people experience peace through Christ and to help them become assets to their communities through education, work programs, and vocational training. Staff members stress a high standard of spiritual excellence expressed through the kind of strong work ethic the Bible describes. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as work for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. Colossians 3:23-24 Our desire for all who come to Heartland is a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We want to see people develop lifelong wholeness and Christ-esteem, with a strong work ethic. The program is guaranteed to work under the condition that you take the medicine required: hard work, Biblical teaching and an open heart to Jesus Christ. Work ArrangementsMen are required to work at Sharpe Land & Cattle, either at the farm or dairy, as part of their treatment. They carry out day to day responsibilities that help them grow and mature in character. It is this work requirement that makes Heartland Recovery Center stand out. In return for the hours worked at the farm or dairy, the men are paid an hourly wage and their housing unit allowance expenses are deducted from their pay. Heartland is the only known center in the country that pays people who participate in their program. Training and EducationIn addition to a full day at the farm or dairy worksites, there are various programs that help to instill Christian principles into the lives of those who come to Heartland. Monday through Saturday, in the morning, the men have devotions held in the chapel at the center. The residents are also required to attend evening chapel services.
Scripture memorization is a vital part of day to day life while at the Recovery Center. Bible education studies and programs are also offered. As part of our efforts to return people to society whole and able to support a family, as well as make a contribution to their communities, Heartland offers GED preparatory classes. These classes help the men in our Recovery Program complete a high school level education which they must show proof of finishing before they are permitted to graduate from the Program. The Men’s Center Choir is made up of 12-14 volunteers who are living for Jesus, and are dedicated to sing and practice weekly. The choir is able to travel to churches monthly and minister in song and testimony.
